Peter Whitehead Obituary

Peter G. Whitehead of Lowell, formerly of Topsfield and North Andover, passed away unexpectedly on October 18, 2022 at 61 years of age.

Known to his family and childhood friends as “Gerry”, Peter was born in May of 1961 in Wilmington, DE.  He grew up in Topsfield, MA, attended Masconomet Regional High School and later studied at UMass Amherst and Merrimack College.  Professionally, he worked as a computer programmer first at The Hanover Insurance Group and later at John Hancock.

His interests were many and varied. He was a talented musician playing both French horn and string bass. He was an avid gardener and amateur craftsman working primarily in stained glass and wood.  He was a voracious reader with a deep love for movies, often peppering his conversation with his favorite lines.  He had a wicked sense of humor and laughed easily and often.

Service was his love language. He was the person we all relied on, a great sounding board and advisor no matter what issue we faced. He devoted much of the last few years in caring for his mother as her dementia deepened, cheering her with his weekly visits and fresh flowers for her room.

We have been lucky to know him.

Peter is survived by his long-time soulmate Janet Willey of Worcester, his siblings Gregory Whitehead and his wife Christine of Wenham, Susan Whitehead of Watertown, and Jennifer Whitehead of Beverly, his children Jason and his wife Sara Moore of Florida and Crystal Whitehead of Kansas, his grandchildren Kahlyn Moore and Bethany Bragdon as well as his niece Emme Whitehead and his nephew Caleb Shairs.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The Alzheimer’s Foundation (www.alzfdn.org).

The family will be hosting a “Celebration of Life” gathering on Saturday, December 3rd from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Cove Community Center in Beverly, MA. We hope that you will join us to share your memories of him. For more information, please contact revsuewhitehead@gmail.com
